Thinking about making a donation to Christ’s Church Cathedral?

Do you own publicly traded securities in a non-registered investment account?

If you replied yes to those two questions, donating publicly traded securities directly to a registered charity is a smart and tax-effective alternative to donating cash.  The potential tax benefits will vary based on your situation. Before making a decision, please consult your Financial Advisor or Accountant.

How Does that Work?

If you own eligible securities that have appreciated in value, and you decide to sell them, 50% of the capital gains on those shares will be taxed.  On the other hand, if you transfer those shares directly to a registered charity, your capital gains tax is reduced to zero.   Please visit the section on Gifts of publicly traded shares and stock options on Canada Revenue Agency's website for details.

It's Easy To Do!

Once you have made the decision to donate shares to Christ's Church Cathedral, we ask that you please notify your broker/financial institution directly and that you also notify the Cathedral by completing our Notification of  Securities Transfer Form and sending it to either our Donations Administrator or our Treasurer or you can drop it on the collection plate during a service. All required details are on the notification form.
