If you have a garden or even just a plant or two outside or on a balcony, plant native species and think about replacing non-native plants and removing any invasive species. The internet has lots of information about native plants and invasive species and you can also talk to our own Bishopsgate gardeners

Why?

  • Most insects will not eat non-native plants which means birds and other species lose a food source and biodiversity suffers. Without biodiversity our entire support system for human as well as animal life would collapse.
  • Plants also clean up our air. Less pollution can reduce a number of health diseases and positive associations with nature can motivate us to make other changes to protect our planet.

We invite you to visit the Nature Canada website document, Your Guide to Native Ontario Plants, where you'll find an extensive selection of flowers, shrubs, and grasses native to Ontario as well as best practices to conserve biodiversity in your garden!
