Week 3:  High-Impact Opportunities

“Hamilton is stepping up with urgency and purpose,” said Mayor Andrea Horwath. “Council declared a climate emergency and committed to bold, sustainable economic and ecological development."

The City of Hamilton has approved up to $100,000 in Climate Change Reserve funding to update its Low Carbon Scenario - a roadmap originally crafted in 2019  - to reflect recent advancements in clean technology, cost reductions, and local opportunities such as green steel production.  This update will inform how Hamilton can move faster toward net-zero and is expected to guide strategy reviews every 3-5 years with a focus on High-Impact Opportunities:

  1.   Moving to electric vehicles faster and adding more places to charge them.
  2.   Building more bike lanes, trails and paths for walking, biking and e-scooters.
  3.   Encouraging people to walk, bike, or take public transit instead of driving.
  4.   Helping Hamilton’s steel industry reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
  5.   Supporting green hydrogen and switching to 100% clean, renewable electricity.
