Our celebration today of the Feast of the Creator opens the Season of Creation with worship that turns attention to God’s work in creation. Rooted for centuries in Orthodox tradition, the feast has become the focus of a wider ecumenical movement, embraced by Anglican, Roman Catholic, Lutheran and Reformed churches seeking a shared liturgical expression of God as Creator.
The Five Marks of Mission express the Anglican Communion’s understanding of God’s mission and our response as stewards of the Earth:
- To proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom;
- To teach, baptize, and nurture believers;
- To respond to human need by loving service;
- To seek to transform unjust structures of society, to challenge violence of every kind, and to pursue peace and reconciliation;
- To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth.
Note that the Fifth Mark of Mission connects the Season of Creation to our role and our responsibility to pursue peace and reconciliation with creation, all year round!
