Narthex renovations

As you will see the Narthex reno is coming on well!!
We are looking forward to having a grand opening on Oct 4 straight after the 10:30am Sunday Service.

We will also be holding our annual Thanksgiving Brunch. Save the date!  Bring a friend!

You may like to bring along a baked Apple Pie, using a favourite family recipe!

During the narthex renovations, we will again provide light refreshments for our parishioners during coffee hour this Sunday. If you prefer a hot drink, please take this opportunity to visit a local café on James St N. or Barton St. E. and enjoy a coffee or lunch out together after the service.   Here are some local options with their and link to their websites:

*Supercrawl, founded in 2009, features three days of free music and arts featured on-street and across multiple stages lining the length of James Street North. The festival attracts over 250,000 visitors annually to watch over 50 bands, making it one of the largest free music festivals in Ontario.

Supercrawl also showcases large-scale visual art installations, independent fashion, street theatre, performance art, dance, an authors' tent, an artisan market, and food trucks.

Supercrawl 2025 marks the 16^th year of the music and arts festival on James Street North.  Christ's Church Cathedral is proud to be a part of this event every year.  We open our doors during Supercrawl and offer guided tours, musical performances, art installations, and the serenity of our building for all.  Please feel free to drop by.

The Season of Creation September 1 – October 4, 2026

 What is our Christian response?

The air we breathe, the water we drink, the forests and fields, and all the riches of creation are gifts from God.

We have been entrusted with their care and called to "safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the Earth."

Yet injustice, corruption, war, wildfires, floods, pollution, inequality, and excessive consumption threaten these precious gifts.

Our Christian response is faithful stewardship—planting, repairing, conserving, living simply, giving generously, speaking up for justice, and showing up to care for God's creation. Every small act is an act of hope.

Study the Bible in community through this drop-in participant-focused method of reading scripture together.  Discovery Bible Study is designed to meet the spiritual needs of our participants by considering what the biblical text tells us about God and human beings. 

You'll find us in the nave on Thursdays.  All are welcome!

This fall, we will be again offering the very successful small-group program, Being With, from St. Martin-in-the-Fields, London.  Whether you know a little or a lot, come explore life and faith together.

The Cathedral is offering voluntary Naloxone Training to Cathedral Café volunteers.  It's also a great opportunity to extend to our Cathedral Parishioners.  Naloxone is a fast-acting medication used to temporarily reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.

This training will provide information about drug overdoses and how to administer naloxone.  The trainer is Priya Sandhu, Pharmacist and co-owner of Pharmasave on James St, South.

All are very welcome to join us for a Taizé service every other month from September 2026 to  May 2027. 1pm-1:30pm

At a time of great stress and anxiety for many people, the peaceful songs, contemplative readings, and candlelit prayers in Taizé worship are a balm to the heart and spirit.  You are welcome to stay after the 10:30  service for the coffee hour and sit in the circle of chairs near the piano. The service lasts about half an hour.  If you have any questions about Taizé, please contact Bruce Burbidge.

We invite you to participate in our Book Study program via Zoom , similar to a book club!  For this month, we will be reading and discussing Henri Nouwen's book, Behold the Beauty of the Lord:  Praying with Icons, available at  Indigo or at your local Canadian bookstores.

The Cathedral is funded by monetary gifts from parishioners, friends, and visitors.  Your donation supports our many ministries including worship services, outreach, pastoral care, spiritual growth, climate change initiatives, and music programs, as well as the maintenance and upkeep of our heritage building and staff salaries.

As of August 28, Cathedral Café at Christ’s Church Cathedral, 252 James Street North, has been temporarily closed due to a weather-related issue affecting the ceiling in Myler Hall.  Our staff acted quickly to evacuate the space after noticing a growing crack in a portion of the ceiling that subsequently fell.  The safety of our guests who rely on the Café, our staff, and volunteers will always come first.

We know this closure affects people who depend on Cathedral Café for meals, a safe and welcoming space, washrooms, essential supplies, and connections to housing and other community supports.  During the closure, security staff onsite are helping redirect individuals to other available services.  Please check the City of Hamilton's website page.

St. Matt’s is working closely with the Diocese of Niagara, the City of Hamilton, and our community partners to determine next steps and find a safe path forward.  We are monitoring the situation closely and will share updates as soon as we have them.
 
We remain committed to supporting our community’s most vulnerable neighbours with dignity, compassion and practical assistance.

Clients are being redirected to other community supports by security staff onsite. 

Staying in touch with parishioners and friends of the Cathedral is key to our success as a place of community, compassion, and hope.   Our newsletters ensure that we keep all our constituents up to date with events and issues of the day.

Quarterly, we publish CONTACT, a magazine-style publication featuring a variety of articles on what’s happening at the Cathedral, our local community, and the world. The latest edition for Summer 2026 is now available in print from the back of the Church, or digitally using the button below.

There are a lot of excellent programs being highlighted on the Alongside Hope website this month.  We have partnerships with a housing project for adults with special needs in the Ukraine, partnerships in Uganda as Ebola threatens vulnerable communities and partnerships with St. Luke’s hospital in the West Bank. 

The last story leads us to the upcoming Wild Ride in the fall. This year we’re raising funds to provide solar panels for St. Luke’s Hospital.  St. Luke’s serves about 455,000 people in the West Bank,  but unreliable power makes health care precarious.   An article by Janice Biehn is available on Alongside Hope's website can be accessed here: The power of community health care in the West Bank©

Last year we raised money for Madagascar and Mozambique, providing 34 solar suitcases.  This year the plan is to raise funds to provide 407 solar panels for the West Bank.  It is estimated 80% of the electricity needed can be supplied by these panels.

From September to June our doors are open on the first Sunday of the month following the 10:30am service and coffee hour, for anyone to drop in for peace and reflection in the middle of our busy city.  Feel free to light a candle, say a prayer, or just sit quietly in this beautiful space. Maybe you have never been in the Cathedral and just want to have a look around.  Maybe you would just like to listen to some quiet, peaceful music.  Whoever you are, whatever brings you to our doors, you are very welcome. If you have any questions during your visit, there is someone on hand from our Cathedral Community.
