Spiritual Growth Offerings for Lent
Lent begins on March 5 this year and is a 40 day season (not including Sundays) in which Christians reflect and intentionally prepare for the celebrations of Easter. It is traditionally a season of prayer, fasting and giving alms (money to those in need). Historically, it was also a time of preparation for new believers in anticipation of their baptism at the Easter Vigil. As you discern how are you being called to engage in Lent this year, Christ’s Church Cathedral is offering two spiritual growth programs for Lent, scheduled so that you can participate in one or both. Walking Through the Catechumenate: A Shared Lenten Series Come, learn, and grow in your faith while meeting other Anglicans in our neighbourhood! Each Wednesday night in Lent from 7 PM to 9 PM, members from five different downtown Hamilton Anglican churches will gather at one of the host churches to learn about the Catechumenate, the ancient faith training for new Christians. Each event will start with fellowship and refreshments, followed by interesting and practical teaching, and will end with praying Compline together.
Our shared Lenten journey will culminate in all the local churches gathering back at the Cathedral for a shared Easter Vigil service on Saturday April 19 from 9 PM to 11 PM. Rides to the other parishes can be arranged. Please email Karen to request travel assistance. For more information, please email Monica . Lenten Online Book Study: How We Learn to Be Brave Cathedral parishioner the Rev. Christopher White is offering an online book study of Episcopal Bishop Mariann Budde’s book How to Be Brave: Decisive Moments in Life and Faith. Bishop Budde caught the world’s attention recently when she bravely spoke truth to power at the US presidential inauguration service at the Washington National Cathedral. This group will meet Wednesdays at 4:00 PM on Zoom from Wed Mar 5 through Wed Apr 9. Given the current popularity of the book , it can be challenging to find a copy, except through an e-reader. Because of that, Christopher will provide a highlights page and questions to ponder each week. The first question to reflect on: What does hope look like in your life and how have you experienced it? To register, please email Karen, our Parish Coordinator, or email Christopher. Prayers and blessings for a holy Lent! |
