Request for Volunteers
The Layweeders are looking for new volunteers to assist with maintaining the Cathedral Gardens. We meet regularly in Bishopsgate on Friday mornings starting May 24. An evening group will start the same week depending upon interest. We have tools and gloves available to use. Tasks are generally light; weeding, dead heading etc. so we don’t demand a high level of skill. If you have a particular interest in roses for example we welcome your skills. Talk to Nancy Corman 905 522 8386 or Jeni Darling 905 689 7481 after the Sunday morning service or phone for further information. |

May's Climate Action - Plant Native SpeciesEvery Step Counts! Simple Monthly Actions from Climate Justice Cathedral If you have a garden or even just a plant or two outside or on a balcony, plant native species and think about replacing non-native plants and removing any invasive species. The internet has lots of information about native plants and invasive species and you can also talk to our own Bishopsgate gardeners. Why? Plants, animals, and insects depend on each other. Most insects will not eat non-native plants which means birds and other species lose a food source and biodiversity suffers. Even a single tree or shrub can offer a refuge – just remember to skip insecticides and other chemicals. Impact Without biodiversity our entire support system for human as well as animal life would collapse. Cleaner air and less pollution can reduce a number of health diseases and positive associations with nature can motivate us to make other changes to protect our planet, promoting happier and healthier lives. * Adapted from the CBC podcast "Ten Minutes to Save the Planet" and the UN's Actions for a Healthy Planet |
