A Stunning Addition To Bishopsgate
If you've visited Bishopsgate (the Cathedral's forecourt on James St N) recently, you will surely have noticed a new addition to our beautiful gardens. We are thrilled to welcome Tim Schmalz's life-sized sculpture Be Welcoming as a powerful and permanent reminder that each one of us has the vocation and capacity to be an angel for others on our journey through life. Be Welcoming was created in 2019, inspired by a verse from Chapter 13 of the Letter to the Hebrews: “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it.” Tim Schmalz's work is known and installed worldwide, including at the Vatican in Rome. You may have seen another of his pieces, Homeless Jesus, outside St. Patrick's Church at the corner of King and Victoria in downtown Hamilton. More information about Tim Schmalz and his work is available on his website at https://www.sculpturebytps.com/. The Cathedral was able to acquire this sculpture through the generosity of Vera Tomlinson, aunt of parishioner Barbara Jepson, who endowed a fund for the maintenance of Bishopsgate as part of her estate planning. A service of blessing and dedication is being planned. Visit our Cathedral website for more details here.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
September 30 each year marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Coinciding with Orange Shirt Day, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a day to honour the children who never returned home from the residential schools and the Survivors. Commemoration of this day opens opportunities for remembrance, education, and action as we move forward in reconciliation. Chief Dr. Robert Joseph, OBC, OC, is a Hereditary Chief of the Gwawaenuk people, Ambassador for Reconciliation Canada, and Chair of the Native American Leadership Alliance for Peace and Reconciliation. You may like to read his book ‘Namwayut - A Pathway to Reconciliation’, as it explores four themes: Honouring Sacred Spaces, Healing from our Shared Past, Indigenous Leadership and Wisdom, and Namwayut: We Are All One. Volunteer Cooks and Assistants Needed
Helping those in need over Christmastide. Wonderful Volunteers are needed to help out on Christmas Day for our Christmas Dinner, an opportunity to help those that desperately need food, kindness, and support during what would be a lonely, helpless time. The volume of guest this year will require us to have two meal sittings, and this will require an increase in the number of helpers required. If you can help us to cook or serve on Christmas Day, please contact Richard Cunningham at countertenor.rc@gmail.com for more details. If you are unable to help on the day contact Richard to see if you can assist with monetary gifts or other appropriate gift items. More details coming soon. How about assisting by cooking meals to fill our freezer! Pre-cooked meals are desperately needed to be given to parishioners in need over the cold Winter months. Do you know of anyone coming out of hospital that may need these meals or a family member going through trying circumstances? We would like to have a crew of four or five people to cook a large selection of meals which can be frozen and put aside for these kinds of situations. Cooks required on Wednesday evenings from 4pm until around 8pm. Please contact Richard Cunningham at countertenor.rc@gmail.com for further details.

Every Step Counts! - September's ActionSimple Monthly Actions from Climate Justice Cathedral This month as part of the Global Season of Creation, Climate Justice Cathedral joins with Christians around the world praying, educating, advocating, and acting against climate breakdown. We pray: Creator God, we praise you for making our common home - the Earth. Our selfishness, greed, neglect, and abuse have caused the climate crisis, loss of biodiversity, human suffering, and the suffering of all our fellow creatures. We confess that we have failed to listen to the groans of the Earth, and the Spirit of hope and justice that lives within us. Work with and through us in our weakness, to heal and restore your beloved Creation. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen. |
