The Cathedral Café

The Cathedral Café

It has been seven months since Christ’s Church Cathedral partnered with St. Matthew’s House to offer the ministry of the Cathedral Café six days per week, 7 hours per day to our neighbours who are living precariously.
This ministry could not be possible without the financial contributions from the City of Hamilton and YOUR support (financial, prayers and in-kind service). Together with the staff from St. Matthew’s House, we have a roster of 148 volunteers, working to serve, support and provide hope to the 160 people who visit the Cathedral Café daily. As we know, the City of Hamilton, like many communities across Ontario and Canada, are faced with a housing crisis. There are approximately 1,600 people without housing in our community, 200 living in encampments. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE!
We know that we are not resolving the housing crisis at the Cathedral Café; however, we are providing a welcoming and inclusive environment where people can  access wraparound services, support, food, beverages, clothing.

Cathedral Oasis

Cathedral Oasis

An Open Time for Peace and Reflection - Sundays through August 12noon-1:30pm

Our doors are open every Sunday through August for anyone to drop in for peace and reflection in the middle of our busy city.  Feel free to light a candle, say a prayer, or just sit quietly in this beautiful space. Maybe you have never been in the Cathedral and just want to have a look around? Maybe you would just like to listen to some quiet, peaceful music? Whoever you are, whatever brings you to our doors, you are very welcome. In case you have any questions while you are visiting, there is someone on hand from our community.
For level access please go to the reception door to the left of the main Cathedral entrances.

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Friedrich Lui who has completed his Masters in History and will be returning to China for September.

Birds Of The Cathedral Exhibit

Have you ever wondered why there are images of doves, eagles, pelicans, swallows and peacocks in the windows and wooden and stone carvings of the Cathedral?  If you want to know, visit the exhibit of photos in the north-west corner of the cathedral from August 18 to September 8.  You can find answers, and also see photos of some of the images in the Cathedral and of those species in nature.  The exhibit has been compiled by Sandy Darling, a member of the congregation, a birder and author of the Visual Guide to Christ’s Church Cathedral (on sale for $10.00).

From the Generosity Team

From the Generosity Team

“Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” Hebrews13:2

We love to show hospitality to strangers here at the Cathedral. As the mid-September SuperCrawl approaches, we’re gearing up to welcome huge numbers of visitors. Some of our guests are curious. Many are shy about coming in. Others are simply tired or overwhelmed, and blessed to sit in peace in this beautiful sacred space. Our friendly greeters welcome them all, in the spirit of Paul's message to the Hebrews. A thought for the month of August: it is YOUR generosity that keeps our doors open, our lights on, and our wonderful ministry team paid. When you give generously, thereby you-yes, YOU-have entertained angels unawares!

July and August Climate Action Reflection

Did your score improve over the summer?
Can you identify: Why or Why not?

During July and August Climate Justice Cathedral invited us to look at how we can live both sustainably and faithfully in our everyday lives.  For each of the items below give yourself a 3 if you are doing it now, a 2 if you are working on it and then see if you can improve your total score over the summer.

Lighting: Energy efficient lighting has replaced incandescent bulbs in as many places as possible in the home.

Water: Where possible aerators on taps and low flow shower heads are installed to save water. Single use plastic bottles are not used.  Recycled water is used on plants.

Recycling: Everyone in the home understands the correct use of the blue, green and regular garbage bins. Reusable items are given to charity or offered to others for free.

Vehicle use: Walking/cycling is the first choice of transportation.  Public transportation is used where available. Car trips are planned to reduce excess trips.

Heating & Cooling: If it is possible to change thermostats aim for winter temperatures of 17°C (63°F) at night time or if you are out during the day; and 20°C (68°F) for day time as long as this is comfortable. Summer months: set your thermostat between 24°C/74°F and 26°C/78°F, depending on humidity.

Food: As much as possible locally sourced foods/beverages are used. Ethically sourced coffee, tea, cocoa and sugar are bought from trusted organizations.  One or two meatless meals are prepared weekly.

Gardens, Patios & Balconies:  No pesticides are used.  Mulching and drip watering are practised.  Plants native to Ontario are bought.  If an ice preventer is purchased, it is an environmentally friendly one.

Kitchen: Reusable napkins are used.  Material cloths - not paper towels - are used for spills/drying, etc.  The microwave oven is used when possible, for heating single dishes.

Cleaning: Phosphate and chlorine-free cleaning products are used for washing and cleaning. No harsh chemicals are used in the home -substitutes such as vinegar and baking soda are used instead.

Remember, no one can do it all alone but we can do it together!
