February's Climate Action - A Lenten Challenge

February's Climate Action - A Lenten Challenge

Every Step Counts! Simple Monthly Actions* from Climate Justice Cathedral

Eat less meat!

Why? - Animal agriculture is responsible for 18% of all greenhouse gases with the methane emissions from beef cattle topping the list. And eating less red meat lowers our risk of death from heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

Impact? - In addition to tending to our health, an EU study of North American and British food found going vegan for 2/3 of our meals could cut carbon related emissions by 60%!

Ash Wednesday - Lenten Program

Ash Wednesday - Lenten Program

Wednesday February 14 and all Wednesdays in Lent

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent, a period during which we reflect on our mortality and show repentence for our sins .  The services offered on Ash Wednesday include a Eucharist and the imposition of ashes, often accompanied by the words Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.  The ashes  are prepared by burning palm leaves from the previous year's Palm Sunday celebrations.  The Cathedral offers two services on Ash Wednesday, a said Eucharist at 12:15pm and a Choral Eucharist at 7:00pm.  Please join us.

The Rev. Canon Ian Mobsby will be leading our Lenten Program on Loving Your Neighbourhood, with weekly events on Wednesdays at 7:00pm from February 21 to March 20. The program kicks off on February 21 with Cathedral Chat on Affordable Housing - see separate article.

We welcome panel members:

*Jeff Neven, Chief Executive Officer of Indwell
*Tom Cooper, Director of Hamilton Roundtable for Poverty Reduction
*Michelle Baird, Director of Housing Services for the City of Hamilton

Burning of Palms for Ash Wednesday

If you wish to discard your palms and palm crosses from 2023 (or previous years), there is a basket at the rear of Cathedral where you may place your palms.  We do have enough ashes for this Ash Wednesday; therefore, the discarded palms will be saved for burning next year.  Thank you.

Coldest Night of the Year

February 24 from 4:00-7:00pm

Will you join our Christ’s Church Cathedral Team to walk 2 km in our Barton Street Neighbourhood on February 24, 2024 from 4 pm to 7 pm?

The Coldest Night of the Year is an annual event raising money for and awareness of charities that serve people experiencing hurt, homelessness and hunger.  By joining our walk, you will have opportunity to see the beauty and brokenness of the community we are a part of, and help support the Helping Hands Street Mission. There is much sadness on Barton Street, as people daily live with the difficult realities of financial, social and spiritual poverty, but there is also so much to celebrate, as the community pulls together to share relationship, resources, and hope.  Plus, it is FUN to walk together for a great cause!

To join the Christ’s Church Cathedral Team, register HERE

If you are unable to join the walk and would like to donate our team, please make your donation at the link above.  Or please connect with Kerry Lubrick at kerryllubrick@gmail.com or 905-679-2818.

Narrative Budget

Narrative Budget

Our Cathedral's Sacred Story in 2023

Our Narrative Budget has now been published and will be available for pick up starting on Sunday, February 4, 2024.  It will also be posted on the CCC website.

The Narrative Budget takes the financial information from the Annual Statement presented by our Treasurer at Vestry and turns it into a story.  Instead of Profit and Loss Statements or Balance Sheets, the Narrative Budget tells our story as a community over the past year with photos and graphs.

It is a story of challenges, joy, and blessings.  As a society, we face difficult times with inflation, high interest rates, and a terrible shortage of affordable housing.  As a community we seek to demonstrate the love of God to fellow parishioners and our neighbours.  Our prayer is that we bring peace and comfort in troubled times.

Please take a few moments to read and consider the booklet before our annual Vestry Meeting on February 18.  Ask yourself where you fit into our parish’ journey in the past year.  Challenge yourself to consider how you will engage in parish life in 2024.  Consider the Reflection Exercise and Intention Form that make up the back page of the Narrative Budget.

Thank You from the Christmas Dinner Team!

Thank You from the Christmas Dinner Team!

Thank you for your support in making the 2nd Annual Christmas Dinner a success!

On Christmas Day, 149 individuals received a Christmas Dinner and dessert in a warm and friendly environment thanks to your generosity and on-site volunteers.  Most of the people who attended the dinner did receive a gift.  We had planned for 100 people; however, hosted more than anticipated.  The people who attended the dinner were so thankful and appreciative of the Christmas festivities. Special thanks go to the numerous volunteers who prepared and cooked the dinner, the people that baked the amazing selection of desserts, the people who served the dinner, beverages and distributed gifts and to those who arrived to wash the dishes and cleaned up after the dinner.

In addition, we thank Gwen and Andrew for providing the music during the Hot Chocolate Party prior to the dinner and to the volunteers who served the hot chocolate and cookies.

With sincere admiration for your generosity, kindness and encouragement,
Roseann Barry, Richard Cunningham, Gen McIntyre and Kerry Lubrick

TrueCity Conference 2024

TrueCity Conference 2024

Growing Together - Friday, February 23 & Saturday, February 24

TrueCity extends to us an invitation to their annual conference.

"Fertile soil is one of Jesus' favourite images for stirring reflection on vibrant spiritual life. He provokes us to consider, how do we live a 'good soil' kind of life together? What are the conditions in the collective soil of our lives which allows good things to grow? When at its best TrueCity has cultivated such soil as we have leaned into our aspiration to be churches together for the good of the city.

For the past 20 years one way we have done this is to collectively set aside a Friday evening and a Saturday to come together with brothers and sisters from other Hamilton congregations to worship, share stories, learn, and celebrate what God is growing among us. This year we want to call attention to this and other such collective practices that create good soil. We will reflect on two decades of experience together and consider what God has done to cultivate the soil in our city so that good things have come to life. And we will look ahead to how we can keep on Growing Together, witnessing to God's on-going faithfulness in Hamilton."

For full details please refer to TrueCity's website.  Please click the registration button below to sign up for this event.
