CATHEDRAL CHAT

CATHEDRAL CHAT

Hamilton was recently named one of the least affordable cities in North America. How did we get here? Where do we go from here?

Stephen Dale’s new book, Shift Change: Scenes from a Post-Industrial Revolution, tells the story of post-industrial Hamilton. In it, Dale tackles some of the most important and challenging issues facing our city: gentrification, unaffordable housing, displacement, poverty, and social conflict. But he also highlights the stories of those working to make Hamilton a more inclusive and equitable city.

Shift Change is deeply reported, clearly written, and offers a thoughtful and compelling take on the past, present, and possible future of Hamilton.

We’re thrilled to invite you to join us for an evening with Stephen Dale to discuss his book! Stephen will be joining us in person at the Cathedral on April 6 from 7:00 to 8:00pm. There will be an audience Q&A following our interview with Stephen.

You can attend the event in person at Christ’s Church Cathedral (252 James St. N) or watch the livestream on our YouTube channel. (Masks required for in-person attendance.)

Praying for and Supporting the People of Ukraine

According to the United Nations, about three million people have fled Ukraine since the beginning of the invasion. This has placed Ukraine among the world's worst refugee crises.

Casualties continue to mount and people are unable to safely leave cities.  In many cases, those forced to remain are trapped without access to water, electricity, and heat!

PWRDF continues to accept donations toward its emergency response in support of those displaced by the invasion of Ukraine.

How you can help.

Donate to this response by clicking on the button below.

You may also donate by telephone at 416-822-9083 or leave a voicemail toll-free at 1-866-308-7973 and yur call will be returned.

Alternatively, you may mail a cheque to PWRDF, 80 Hayden Street, 3rd floor, Toronto, Ontario, M4Y 3G2.  Please rememebr to mark "Ukraine" in the memo field of your cheque.

WARMING & RESTING CENTRE

In response to the growing housing crisis and the changing weather, our Cathedral remains open as a warming and resting centre for our unhoused and precariously housed neighbours from 10am to 12pm on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

If you are interested in volunteering or offering an in-kind donation (snacks, juice, coffee, tea etc.) to this ministry please contact the church office.  Monetary donations to support this on-going ministry can be made by sending a cheque (or click here for other ways to give) to the Cathedral and designating the donation as "Warming & Resting Centre".

PRAYING FOR PEACE & JUSTICE

PRAYING FOR PEACE & JUSTICE

As we continue to pray for peace and justice in the Ukraine please take a moment to light a candle and say a prayer at the votive stand, in the Cathedral,  if you wish.

GENEROSITY TEAM

GENEROSITY TEAM

The Generosity Team met this week.  As usual, the conversation was a rich one.  One of our members pointed out that unlike most other non-profit organizations with which we may be familiar, Christ's Church Cathedral is entirely self-funded.  In other words, we operate exclusively on money raised from our members and people associated with the Cathedral, past and present.  It's true that over the past couple of years we've benefited from federal government funding through the Canadian Emergency Wage Subsidy, but that was a temporary pandemic program that has now come to an end, and we receive no other subsidies.  So, the participation of our members in the financial support of our church is important.

Last week at the annual vestry meeting, we had the opportunity to look at the 2022 budget.  If you haven't yet seen it, you'll find it on p. 24 of the 2021 Annual Vestry Report, available here.  This year's plan sees  59% of our expenses funded by current donors.  30% will be covered by money transferred to the operating budget from funds left to the Cathedral by people who have either died and left money, or who donated to past capital campaigns. At this point, the remaining 11% is projected as an operating deficit which, if necessary, will be covered by surpluses from past years.

If you aren't a regular contributor to the Cathedral, please consider giving to this amazing place that offers inspiring worship and music in beautiful surroundings, compassionate pastoral care for people facing crises and problems, outreach to the downtown community, and Christian formation.  If you're already a regular donor, could now be the time to increase your gift in order to help us meet our 2022 goals?  Have you considered proportional giving, that is deciding on your gift as a proportion of your income - 2%, 5%, 7%, 10%? Would you be willing to begin to make a pre-authorized gift, to ensure that we receive your gift even when you can't be present?  (If you'd like to change your gift, or begin to give by regular deduction from your bank account (which can be changed or stopped at any time), please contact Alison Meredith in the Cathedral office - alison.meredith@niagaraanglican.ca.)

While your value as a Cathedral member or associate will never be measured by what you give, Christian stewardship expressed through regular proportional giving is an important part of learning to follow Jesus more closely - and you may find it extremely rewarding to know that you're supporting the Cathedral's long tradition of worship and service in downtown Hamilton.  Every gift - small or large - is so important.
