CATHEDRAL CHAT
Hamilton was recently named one of the least affordable cities in North America. How did we get here? Where do we go from here? Stephen Dale’s new book, Shift Change: Scenes from a Post-Industrial Revolution, tells the story of post-industrial Hamilton. In it, Dale tackles some of the most important and challenging issues facing our city: gentrification, unaffordable housing, displacement, poverty, and social conflict. But he also highlights the stories of those working to make Hamilton a more inclusive and equitable city. Shift Change is deeply reported, clearly written, and offers a thoughtful and compelling take on the past, present, and possible future of Hamilton. We’re thrilled to invite you to join us for an evening with Stephen Dale to discuss his book! Stephen will be joining us in person at the Cathedral on April 6 from 7:00 to 8:00pm. There will be an audience Q&A following our interview with Stephen. You can attend the event in person at Christ’s Church Cathedral (252 James St. N) or watch the livestream on our YouTube channel. (Masks required for in-person attendance.) For more infomation visit:

PWRDFIncreases Support for Ukraine Since Russia began rolling its tanks into Ukraine on February 24th, donations to PWRDF have flooded in, with an over-whelming $266,500 having been raised in just a few short weeks. At the start of the invasion, PWRDF responded quickly with $20,000 to an ACT Alliance appeal. Later, it increased that initial amount to $50,000 and, most recently, announced an additional $50,000 allocation to this ACT Alliance appeal. As well, PWRDF has designated $50,000 to HelpAge International. This organization supports vulnerable seniors all over the world. It has been working in Moldova since 2000 and is now building up its humanitarian presence there by working to support seniors trying to cross the border from Ukraine into Moldova. Moldova, which is landlocked by Ukraine and Romania, has a population of 2.6 million and is identified as being the poorest country in Europe. Even so, it has already welcomed 250,000 refugees, many of whom are seniors. As donations continue to come in, PWRDF will be disbursing funds to its partners on the ground who can put money to good use right away. How you can help Donate to this response by clicking on the button below. You may also donate by telephone at 416-822-9083 or leave a voicemail toll-free at 1-866-308-7973 and your call will be returned. Alternatively, you may mail a cheque to PWRDF, 80 Hayden Street, 3rd floor, Toronto, Ontario, M4Y 3G2. Please remember to mark “Ukraine” in the memo field of your cheque. Please continue to pray for all impacted by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. SIMNEL CAKEEnjoy a coffee/tea and a piece of Simnel cake this week! In the Church of England, the fourth Sunday of Lent is known as Mothering Sunday. The Church of England is the "mother church" of the Anglican Church of Canada to which Christ's Church Cathedral belongs, and it's our tradition to mark this week with a gift of Simnel cake to those attending Sunday morning services.
According to Wikipedia, traditions around Mothering Sunday have roots in the middle ages when Christians were encouraged to visit the church of their baptism, or their "mother church" on the fourth Sunday in Lent. As time passed the tradition evolved to include recognition of mothers - likely because the return to the mother church became an occasion for reunions with family still living in that parish. Eventually young people, particularly those working as domestic servants, or as apprentices, were given the fourth Sunday of Lent off to visit their mothers and families of origin, and Mothering Sunday became primarily a celebration of motherhood.
We mark this week at Christ's Church Cathedral with the gift of a red carnation for women of the congregation, and a piece of Simnel cake for everyone. In doing so, we remember our historic ties with the Church of England, our role as the mother church of the Diocese of Niagara, and the importance of the mothers, grandmothers and mother figures in our lives. The word "simnel" is derived from the Latin siminellus, meaning "fine bread," as well as from simila or "the finest wheat flour." The recipe we use at Christ's Church Cathedral includes butter, sugar, eggs, flour, salt, spices, lemon, almonds and almond essence, baking soda, currants, raisins, peel, and cherries.

AROUND THE BAY ROAD RACEMarch 27: We're back - and looking for Sponsors! After a two-year hiatus, Hamilton’s long tradition resumes this Sunday, March 27. Although pandemic circumstances mean fewer runners this year, the numbers will still be significant. Best of all, the 30 Km racers will once again run by the Cathedral! If you want to cheer them on, be on the curb at 9:30 am. Please remember to plan your route to the Sunday morning services, as some streets will be closed. (See https://bayrace.com/) And again, your Cathedral’s Around the Bay teams invite your financial sponsorship, in support of our Choral Scholarships fund. This fund pays for our choir leads, who make such a wonderful contribution to the music we love. We have two teams this year – a 30K relay team (the “Cathedral Flyers”: Tom Komaromi, Laurie Newman, and John Hatch), and a 5Km participant (Wendy Newman). Thanks to Janina Vanderpost for her photo display of past Cathedral teams in the Narthex. You can use the envelopes by the display to make your donation, or you can contribute online. Your Cathedral teams thank you for your support. For more infomation visit:

Verification of your vaccinations is be sent to Alison.meredith@niagaraanglican.ca Please be assured that records will be kept confidential. Scheduling for duties at future services will be contingent on verifying your vaccination status.
