COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT and GENEROSITY
The Cathedral has a history of offering hospitality to the community around us. Highlighted here are just a few of the ways in which our Cathedral strives to be a generous neighbour. Bishopsgate is a gift to the Cathedral and the community which was made possible through the generosity of Vera and Percy Thomlinson. The beautiful gardens which are maintained by Cathedral volunteers are a sanctuary for many people in a neighbourhood with few green spaces. Bishopsgate provides a prime location for events including Markers' Market which has helped launch entrepreneurs into their own businesses. Through the generosity of the Cathedral parishioners and community members the Tuesday morning Meal Ticket Program evolved from simply giving out the Salvation Army meal tickets to a supportive weekly program where dedicated volunteers provided caring and unconditional hospitality to an average of 90 people in need in our community. The visitors were very grateful for the food, beverages, socks and toiletries consistently provided every week. There were other acts of generosity in support of the program such as the volunteer who brought pizza every week; those who donated gently used clothing and the man who appeared every Christmas with a generous cheque. The Cathedral Knitters provided warm hats, scarves and gloves each winter. Neighbours also generously supported the program. Charred provided lunch for the meal ticket recipients on two occasions and Morgenstern’s provided underwear one Christmas. The Tuesday morning Program was paused in 2019 due to COVID but the Resting and Hygiene Centre that was established at the Cathedral in June, July, and part of August provided support not only for several of the meal ticket recipients but many others in need who were disproportionately affected by the pandemic. It was amazing and heart warming to see the generosity of those who volunteered their time and those who donated food, supplies and financial support. The Cathedral is well known for generously providing Myler Hall as a free, accessible meeting space especially in support of anti-poverty groups. Out of the Cold is one such group that has used Myler Hall since that program began. The Cathedral Community also reaches out to support those in need though the weekly food donations and financial support to St. Matthew’s House. This support has benefitted the children, their families and older adults who are some of the most vulnerable on the community. The Cathedral has also engaged with the community as a venue for music and artists. The monthly Art Crawl welcomed thousands of visitors a year. It is only with your ongoing generous support that the Cathedral is able to continue to participate in meaningful community engagement which makes such a positive difference to those we serve in so may ways. |

THE BLUE ANGELBy Wayne Allan The Blue Angel sculpture was created by Wayne Allan (1941-2018), who pursued studies in sculpture, printmaking, collage and other media at McMaster University, Mohawk College, Dundas Valley School of Art and elsewhere. He had many exhibitions of his work in the Hamilton area . Wayne was a deeply spiritual man, active in the life of St. James Anglican Church in Dundas and attending many courses and retreats on spiritual life and the arts. “But to say anything about Allan’s art without mentioning the spiritual dilemma that forces humankind surely is to miss the point…What Wayne Allan’s art does is to remind us of the spiritual.” ( Robert Yates, Burlington Cultural Centre, 1990) In 2019, Wayne’s wife, Sheila Russell, graciously offered one of Wayne’s sculptures to Christ’s Church Cathedral. We are delighted and thankful to receive this inspiring work of art into this Cathedral. |

A WORD FROM THE CHURCH OFFICE
Thank you all for your patience as we transitioned to our new data base/web site. Unfortunatley with the early demise of a compuer in the office the transition was somewhat thrust upon us and we embarked on a steep learning curve. As you can see the Chronicle is in a different format and we hope you enjoty the new look. We will continue to provide printed copies on Sundays and send one to those who are not internet connected. There may be some instances (on some devices) where the graphics do not download automatically. You may view these individually, click on "view in web browser" or change your setting so as to allow the download of pictures. If you hear of anyone who would like to receive the Chronicle on line please invite them to visit our web site and "subscribe" to our newsletter on the home page. Thank you.
