Mothering Sunday - Simnel CakeAn Ancient Tradition Mothering Sunday (March 10 this year) has been a special day in the Christian church calendar in the UK since Mediaeval times. On the fourth Sunday of Lent people, especially those serving in the big houses, were given the day off to visit their mother churches and their mothers and families. In the midst of Lenten fasting Simnel Cake was baked as a sweet treat. Made with white wheat flour (simila) and lots of fruit and spices it was topped with eleven marzipan balls symbolic of the eleven faithful apostles. We continue to celebrate this Lenten tradition here today as we bake our simnel cakes - why not bring one to share?

March's Climate Action - Save Energy at HomeFrom Climate Justice Cathedral - Every Step Counts! Switch to LED light bulbs, wash laundry in cold water, hang things to dry, take shorter showers, insulate your windows, weatherstrip your doors, adjust your thermostat so that you are heating or cooling the person instead of the room. When replacing appliances chose energy efficient ones and replace an oil or gas furnace with a heat pump. Log into your energy provider or look at your bill to learn about your monthly usage and changes over time. Why? If you rely on fossil fuels in any way but don’t have the means to get off it by installing a heat pump or solar panel you can still make a difference, save money and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by reducing your energy. Impact? Studies show that the energy supply sector accounts for 35% of global emissions, the largest contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions! When it comes to reducing the global average individual carbon footprint from 6.3 tons (2020) to 2.1 tons in 2030 as recommended by experts, home energy is a significant area of opportunity. Energy star appliances have achieved a 4 billion metric ton reduction in greenhouse gases and an electric heat pump can reduce your carbon footprint by an average of 900 kg of CO2/year. * Adapted from the CBC podcast "Ten Minutes to Save the Planet" and the UN's Actions for a Healthy Planet |
